Banal plastic flower boxes are taboo on the creatively designed balcony. Planters made of natural materials are in trend so that you can build your own balcony box. Resourceful gardeners with a talent for DIY have discovered Euro pallets as a starting point. These instructions explain step by step how to convert a Euro pallet into a flower box.

Stylish balcony boxes can be built from Euro pallets

Material and tool list

  • 1 euro pallet (new or used)
  • 1 black, large garbage bag or pond liner
  • hand tacker
  • Jigsaw or handsaw
  • hammer
  • nails
  • 2 m hemp rope
  • Sandpaper or orbital sander

Euro pallets (€29.99) are mostly also made of pine wood, which is impregnated with heat and without the use of chemicals. The pallets are used throughout Europe for transport purposes according to a cross-border exchange system. Again and again, some of these pallets fall out of the system and can be purchased by private individuals. Please note that even a discarded Euro pallet is worth real money and is not a waste product. Don't just pick up a pallet at the side of the road, but ask the owner if they will give it away for free or at a price.

Instructions for the conversion work

The following instructions explain step by step how to convert a Euro pallet into a small window box that you can hang on the wall or a railing. How to do it right:

  • Saw off the bottom part of the pallet
  • Sand down the resulting edges
  • Drill holes in the upright wooden slats with the wood drill for the hemp rope
  • Pull the rope through, knot it and fix it with all-purpose glue
  • Close the flower box (€16.99) from below with one or two pallet boards
  • Cut and nail the boards to fit

If the pallet boards close the flower box flush, please drill two small holes for water drainage. Only then do you line the box with the garbage bag that you have cut open or the pond liner. Staple the foil on all sides. Finally, cut a cross in the lining over the holes in the bottom so that water can run off unhindered.

Decorative chalkboard calls plants by their names - That's how chalkboard paint works

A Euro pallet as a balcony box is predestined to plant herbs in it. So that you do not later have to puzzle over which species thrive here, mark the planting with a board. This is easy to do with special chalkboard paint. The liquid paint hardens within 24 hours and can then be written on again and again, similar to a blackboard.

Sand the front of the window box smooth and mark the surface to be painted with masking tape. Unsharp edges can easily be corrected later with sandpaper. After the blackboard paint has dried, form a decorative frame from the remaining hemp rope by attaching the rope all around with all-purpose glue.

tips

In order to make a Euro pallet flower box winter-proof, the natural appearance does not have to be impaired by bubble wrap. Cover the balcony box with winter fleece made of sheep's wool or coconut mats (€21.90), protect the planting from frost damage and still not break the style.
