Juniper is a slow-growing tree that tolerates regular pruning well. In addition to the time, you should pay attention to a few aspects so that the shrub does not look unattractive. There are various pruning techniques for which the juniper is suitable.

The juniper tolerates pruning well

Before the cut

The pruning tool must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with alcohol before use so that the juniper does not get any diseases. Use gloves as the sharp needles can quickly cause injury. The slightly toxic plant sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive people.

The ideal time

Shape cuts are possible throughout the growing season. Intensive pruning must be carried out outside the bird breeding season, otherwise fines may apply. A radical pruning during the breeding season can destroy nests. Even if you want to bring the wood into shape, you should carry out the maintenance measures outside of the breeding activity. This begins on March 1st and ends on September 30th.

cutting rhythm

Although the juniper is one of the slow-growing trees, it should be cut back annually. Choose an overcast and cool day in spring to prune the shrub. If you trim the shrub before it buds, it can bud well in the coming vegetation period and form dense branches. Pruning is also possible in October when the shrub has outgrown its shape during the summer.

Pruning of hedges

Hedges and shrubs are cut in a trapezoidal shape so that the lower branches and leaves also get enough light. This shape is not only visually appealing, but also prevents balding in the lower area. Remove dead branches and tighten strings to maintain the desired shape.

Align your hedge trimmer (€77.00) parallel to the plant. Cut the juniper along your guide lines from tip to base. Corners are slightly rounded to increase the incidence of light.

Shape cutting for solitary trees

Shrubs in a solitary position are suitable for designing special growth forms. With the help of a template you can form balls, spirals or animals out of your juniper. The corresponding shape can be made out of wire and slipped over the plant. Dead shoots are removed before topiary. All overhanging branches are cut back, with each cut starting at a branch fork.

Design cut for bonsai

Junipers are popular in bonsai art as they allow for extravagant shapes. The cut is of particular importance for this. The wood is well tolerated by pruning, but tolerates regular pruning better than a radical pruning.

Tips for the right cut:

  • Clip off the shoot tips regularly
  • avoid radical cutbacks
  • Pull off protruding fibers with tweezers
  • completely remove dead branches

Removing dead branches requires some preparation so that there are no gaps in the bonsai. Shoots must develop above and below the targeted branch, which will conceal the gap. Alternatively, a bare branch can be used for deadwood design.
