The service pear is no longer usually planted in the garden with a focus on using the edible fruit as it used to be. It is therefore hardly surprising that good advice is expensive for many hobby gardeners when the leaves are colored bright red.

In autumn the pear gets red leaves

Autumn colors or copper pear pear?

If red leaves suddenly appear on a pear tree, this can initially have various reasons:

  • varietal peculiarity
  • seasonal color change
  • drought stress
  • illness

One of the most popular varieties of the pear is the so-called copper pear, precisely because of the magnificent red color of the leaves. Their leaves not only turn a striking red in autumn, but also show a copper-like red tone in the young shoots of fresh leaves. Other service pear trees also get intensively red colored leaves when autumn makes itself felt. However, this autumnal change of color does not always have to be exactly aligned with the calendar. Sometimes red leaves are actually symptoms of a disease that require special care.

Drought stress causes premature lifting

It is not at all uncommon for service pear trees to gradually develop completely red leaves in the middle of summer. This can be related to weather phases characterized by heat and extreme drought. It is true that pear trees can survive such conditions without any problems if they are not additionally poured. However, it can very well happen that the plants are stimulated to fall prematurely due to drought stress. In such a case, you should water the affected plants extensively and ensure a more constant water supply in the following year.

Red leaves as a symptom of disease

If the leaves have a spotted surface in various shades of red instead of an optically attractive red colour, this can be an indication of the presence of a fungal infestation. Rock pears are relatively often affected by pear rust. This occurs above all when the pear and the juniper are too close together, since the juniper acts as an intermediate host. Affected branches should be cut out and discarded with the fall leaves.

tips

Fire blight can occur not only on grafted pears, but also on a pear. It requires immediate measures such as cutting out affected parts of the plant and destroying the removed plant material without a possibility of contaminating other plants.
