If you have rhubarb in your garden, consider yourself lucky. The stem vegetables are not only very tasty, the large leaves are also ideal for protecting the compost from drying out. That is why rhubarb is very good for compost.

Rhubarb leaves can be disposed of whole on the compost

Use rhubarb to cover the compost

Rhubarb grows very large leaves. These are ideal for covering a compost heap in the garden. This will prevent the compost from drying out too much.

  • Put the whole rhubarb leaves in the compost
  • alternatively tear and mix in
  • Rhubarb peel can also be composted.

Rhubarb contains a lot of oxalic acid, especially in summer. However, the acid is mainly in the stalks, which are harvested and consumed by St. John's Day. The content is not as high in the leaves, so you do not acidify the compost too much through the leaves.

Of course, you can also compost the rhubarb peel without any worries if you peel the rhubarb before cooking.

Chop up the rhubarb before composting

If you have harvested a lot of rhubarb and you cannot use all the leaves to cover, tear the leaves into small pieces. Mix them with preferably dry materials such as ash or shrub cuttings.

As with any other compost material, rhubarb should never be composted with too much of one variety at a time. Only good mixing ensures that valuable humus is created and that rotting does not take too long.

If the decomposition time is very long, the compost will become too moist and then mold. You can observe this particularly well when cutting the lawn.

Rhubarb in the compost bin

The compost bin has a lid so that it does not require any special shading. If you want to compost rhubarb in the bin, tear up the leaves and mix with other materials.

Large amounts of rhubarb leaves and peel should be spread over several days in order to put them on the compost.

tips

Incidentally, planting zucchini on the heap also has a beneficial effect on the compost. The plant requires a lot of nutrients and therefore thrives particularly well here. On the other hand, the large leaves provide shade for the compost and prevent it from drying out.
