In the kitchen, roasted onions are a savory condiment for many classic dishes. What would an onion roast be without roasted onions? You can buy fried onions in any supermarket, but they taste much better if you prepare them yourself.

roast onions
First decide on the right preparation option:
- in the pan
- in the oven
Decide further what kind of roasted onions you need:
- roasted onion rings for, for example, Tyrolean liver or mashed potatoes
- Roasted onion quarters as an accompaniment to briefly roasted meat
- Whole roasted onions as a vegetable side dish
Roast onions in the oven
If you want to roast whole onions or onion quarters, the oven is best.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
- Clean the onion with a damp cloth, cut off any remains of roots and remains of upper shoots.
- Put some oil in a casserole dish and put the unpeeled onions in it. If desired, the onions can also be dry roasted.
- Simply place onion quarters next to each other, peeled or unpeeled.
- Put some salt on the onions.
- Put the mold in the oven for about an hour. The onions or onion quarters are ready when they are golden brown.
- Cut off the top and bottom of the whole onions generously and serve the delicious side dish.
Roast the onions in the pan
Roasted onions are prepared faster in the pan than in the oven. Smaller quantities can also be roasted here in no time at all.
- Peel the onions and cut them into thin slices. Use a sharp knife or try the bread machine.
- Put the onion rings in a bowl, sprinkle some flour over them and mix well. All rings should be floured.
- Choose a large pan and heat some oil (rapeseed oil or sunflower oil) or butter.
- Place the floured rings in the pan and toast them over medium-high heat until golden brown. Make sure you turn them several times so that the onions don't burn.
Roasted onions are degreased on kitchen paper and can then be refined with the spices of your choice.
If you do not need the roasted onion rings immediately for a dish, you can also dry the onions in the oven after roasting. To do this, place the onion rings on a baking tray lined with baking paper and put it in the oven at 80 degrees for one and a half to two and a half hours. The onions are dry if they rustle slightly when you shake the pan. The dried onion rings can be stored in a screw-top jar for some time.
