Hardly any other plant has shaped European gardens as much as the boxwood: The evergreen plant was already used in ancient Rome to border beds, and from the 16th century it finally began its triumphal march thanks to the wide range of possible uses. To this day, the uncomplicated boxwood can be found in almost every garden. If you also want to plant Buxus, you make it easier for the wood to take root in the new location by choosing the optimal planting date.

Late August is a good time to plant boxwood

Plant the boxwood in late summer if possible

Basically, boxwood should be planted in late summer. At this point it is still warm enough for the plant to root in time before winter. In addition, the growth of the shoots in September is only slightly pronounced, which makes it easier for the boxwood to grow its roots - after all, it no longer has to invest any energy in the growth of the above-ground parts (which would not mature in time before the first cold snap anyway). This in turn reduces the stress on the plant caused by planting and ensures that the resulting damage is kept to a minimum. In the following spring, the newly planted box finally develops fresh shoots.

Buchs gets yellow leaves after planting

A typical damage that can occur after planting is yellowing of the leaves. This happens when the roots, which have been stressed or even damaged by planting, can no longer supply the above-ground parts of the plant with sufficient water and nutrients. However, the phenomenon can be avoided with good preparation:

  • Plant in late summer if possible
  • Planting is also possible in winter, but only in frost-free weather
  • choose a dry, not too hot day with an overcast sky
  • do not plant on hot and sunny days
  • Avoid damage to the roots: do not tear off, do not crush
  • Prune box after planting
  • Water regularly for the first three weeks after planting

Ideal time depends on root quality

When you can actually plant your boxwood depends on the existing root ball:

  • Pot / container goods: Planting time throughout the year as long as there is no frost and no drought
  • Balls: Planting time between October and May
  • Bare-rooted goods: Planting time in autumn (October / November) or in spring (February to April)

tips

Do not plant boxwood during the flowering period in April.
