In the supermarket you will find all common types of nuts, but these are usually unroasted. If you prefer roasted nuts for Christmas baking or for snacking between meals, you have to do something yourself.

Freshly roasted nuts are a special treat

roast nuts

Roasted nuts always taste delicious, in cakes, as an ingredient in cookies or as a sweet or savory snack in between. Roasting at home takes little time and is also not labor-intensive. Choose between two variants:

  • Roasting in a pan on the stove
  • Roasting in the oven

Both variants bring the same good results, although roasting in the pan is usually faster and is more recommended for sensitive nut kernels than the oven.

Roasting in the oven

Hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds and macadamia in particular unfold their full aroma when roasted in the oven. Try it.

  1. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees.
  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  3. Place the nuts on the sheet, loosely distributed, not too close together.
  4. Roast for about 15 minutes. The nuts should be golden brown and fragrant.

After the roasting process, let the hot nuts cool down. Warm hazelnuts can easily rid you of their brown skin. Simply rub the nuts between your hands.

Roasting in the pan

Roasting in the pan should be done without fat if possible. Simply add the nuts to the hot pan and toast them, turning frequently, until they are a nice brown color and fragrant. This is the case after about ten to fifteen minutes. Roasting in a pan is particularly suitable for pine nuts, as the nuts are quite sensitive and would burn in the oven.

Refine roasted nuts

Once the nuts are the right color in the oven or pan, transfer them to a bowl to cool. Now the nuts can be seasoned according to your taste.
Those with a sweet tooth love a mixture of sugar and cinnamon, which is simply spread under the hot nuts and mixed well.
Lovers of savory variations should put together their special spice mixture beforehand. Here some examples:

  • salt and pepper
  • Soy sauce
  • curry and thyme
  • hot or pink peppers
  • chilli or garlic powder
  • Dried herbs
  • also roasted onions and coarse sea salt

A tablespoonful of spice is enough for about 300 g of nuts. The nuts refined in this way should be allowed to cool well before consumption. This allows all the moisture to soak in and the nuts get nice and crunchy. A bag full of nuts that you have roasted and seasoned yourself makes a wonderful gift when visiting friends.
