Before planting shrubs, some questions arise. When is the ideal time and where is the best location? Last but not least, it should also be clarified which planting distances are recommended or even required by law.

Shrubs should not be planted too densely

Do I have to keep a minimum distance to the neighbors?

Whether a shrub or tree is too close to the fence is a common reason for quarrels among neighbors. Often even a court has to decide about it. Save yourself such trouble by observing the legal requirements for boundary distances when planting your shrubs. The same applies, by the way, if you want to plant a hedge on your property line.

The regulations or the neighborhood law of your federal state are decisive. Some countries have no legal regulation, then you should use your common sense. A minimum distance of about 50 centimeters is then recommended for shrubs with a final size of less than two meters. If your shrubs are larger, keep them at least a meter away.

What distances apply in my own garden?

You do not have to observe any legal regulations within your garden, with the exception of the property line, of course. It is much more about the good growth of your plants and shrubs. If these are too close together, they compete for light, water and nutrients. This can lead to reduced growth or affect flowering.

The rule of thumb is a minimum distance between individual shrubs of about half the expected growth height. The roots of many shrubs spread out as far as the branches and twigs.

Plant a hedge of shrubs

If you want to plant a hedge, then it should of course be nice and dense, it looks similar with another privacy screen, for example on the terrace. Here you should choose slightly smaller distances.

The essentials in brief:

  • observe legal regulations (neighborhood law)
  • Without law: shrub under 2 m - 50 cm distance, shrub over 2 m - 1 m distance
  • species-typical distances to neighboring plants very individually
  • choose smaller distances when planting hedges

tips

Before planting your new shrubs, find out which legal regulations must be observed. This saves you a lot of trouble and possibly a later transplanting.
