Many garden owners and hobby gardeners have different opinions about the best time to plant shrubs. Professionals, on the other hand, recommend and practice planting in the fall. This practice actually has some advantages over spring planting.

The benefits of fall planting
Shrubs that are planted in autumn are already well rooted in the spring, because the fine roots, which are so important for caring for the bushes, also grow in winter as long as the ground is not frozen.
When spring begins to warm up, the shrubs planted in autumn can put all their energy into growing and budding. They draw the moisture they need from the ground themselves, while shrubs planted in spring would now have to be watered abundantly.
Which shrubs should I plant in autumn?
Planting in autumn for bare-rooted shrubs is particularly recommended. As a rule, these are less work for the nursery than container plants and hardly take up any space. Therefore, they are often offered at particularly low prices.
Make sure that the roots are still fresh when you buy them and have not dried out, and put the shrubs back into the ground as soon as possible. If storage is unavoidable, then at least keep the roots moist with a damp cloth.
Does spring planting make any sense at all?
Many garden plants, including shrubs, are sold in nurseries, garden centers and hardware stores as so-called container plants in pots and/or tubs. The root ball is well protected and the plants are sufficiently supplied with nutrients during transport and when transplanting.
Shrubs traded in root ball can be planted virtually any time of the year as long as the ground is not frozen. Planting in spring is recommended, for example when redesigning the garden, if you don't want to wait until next autumn.
The essentials in brief:
- bare root plants are cheaper but also more sensitive
- Shrubs in containers can be planted almost all year round
- Fine roots also grow in winter
- low evaporation after leaf drop
tips
Above all, bare-root shrubs should be planted in autumn. You will surely enjoy it a lot more next year and also less work.
