There are enough reasons to transplant a shrub. Be it that the shrub has become too big for the old location or that you now want to use the space differently. Most shrubs will do well with careful transplanting.

Early spring is a good time to transplant a shrub

Can all shrubs be transplanted?

Some shrubs don't like being transplanted at all, for example the broom (bot. Genista). Other shrubs are less sensitive. In general, however, young shrubs tolerate transplanting better than old ones. Fully grown shrubs that are several years old should not be transplanted at all.

When is the best time to transplant shrubs?

It is best to transplant your shrubs in late winter or early spring, before they begin to sprout again, ideally before April. Choose a frost-free day for this work. Night frosts will not harm the freshly transplanted bush, but you can hardly dig up a bush on frozen ground.

The months of August and September are also considered good times for transplanting shrubs. It shouldn't be too warm then, and the flowering period must be over. With evergreen shrubs, it should be noted that they can still root well until winter. All of them do best when they are resting on an overcast day.

What do I have to consider when transplanting?

The root ball of a shrub is usually about the same size as the parts of the plant above ground, the "crown". You should definitely keep this in mind when digging. Dig out the bale carefully, if possible without damaging the roots.

So that the bale does not dry out, you should work quickly and plant the shrub again soon. Water the newly planted shrub thoroughly, also for the next few months.

The essentials in brief:

  • ideal time: frost-free, overcast day during the rest phase
  • only transplant young bushes
  • Dig up the root ball generously
  • work as quickly as possible
  • Don't let the root ball dry out
  • If necessary, cut back the shrub before transplanting

tips

If possible, only transplant young, not fully grown shrubs, old fully grown specimens recover poorly from a move.
