A properly tended garden always includes a compost on which you can dispose of garden waste and kitchen waste and with which you can obtain fertilizer for your plants. Compost bins are available in numerous versions. But you can also build them yourself out of stone with little effort.

Stone composters are particularly durable

Building compost from stone - materials

  • Stones (preferably perforated stones)
  • stones for the ground
  • wooden slats
  • mortar / concrete

Rocks are a particularly good material as they don't rot and the composter lasts for so many years. Preferably use perforated bricks for the walls of the composter. The air supply is thus optimally regulated.

If you have enough space and stones, build a multi-chamber system right away. Then you can turn the compost later without any problems.

The ideal dimensions are one meter long, one meter wide and one meter high. In principle, however, you can keep it as it seems best to you.

Base plate not necessary

A base plate is not necessary for a stone composter, only a fixed row of stones is to be laid for the subsoil. The compost has a direct connection to the soil. This avoids too much moisture and microorganisms can nest in the compost material.

Wall three sides with perforated bricks up to one meter high. If you do not have perforated bricks, move the bricks so that there are gaps for the compost to aerate.

In a multi-chamber system, the rear wall is made correspondingly longer. Then put in partitions.

Wooden front

The front of the compost is formed by wooden slats that you attach horizontally. A guide rail that you attach to the stone walls is beneficial. Then the wooden slats can be easily removed. This makes turning the compost much easier later.

Not too sunny location

Find a convenient location when building a stone composter. They shouldn't be too sunny. Think of the neighbors who don't necessarily want to have a compost right in front of their nose.

tips

Compost can even be made in a bucket on the balcony. You can even make compost in the kitchen if you get a Bokashi bucket.
