Actually, the laburnum is a very rewarding garden plant overall. For its light-shading treetop, which is wonderfully suitable as a pergola, and the decorative flower curtain, it hardly makes any special demands. It is extremely frugal in terms of soil, sunlight and watering - and, above all, it usually flowers well to plentifully under different conditions.
Nevertheless, he also has a few preferences when it comes to location:
- Soil: Rather loamy, but also sandy, prefers alkaline to acidic
- Light: As sunny as possible to semi-shady
The laburnum is also not particularly prone to thirst. It usually copes well with longer dry and hot periods.
Despite these low or poorly defined requirements, the production of the grape-like, hanging, lush and strongly fragrant butterfly blossoms costs a lot of effort for the laburnum. However, because he concentrates less on height growth and is more or less specialized on flowering, a lack of flowering is rather unusual.
Possible reasons for the lack of flowering
If a Laburnum does not bloom, there are only a handful of reasons given its willingness to flower so much:
Conceivably unfavorable location
If the location is responsible for the lack of flowering, then it must be really miserable. That means: the soil could be extremely acidic and impermeable and the shrub could be in complete shade.
Age
It is more likely that the age of the laburnum is simply noticeable. Basically, the laburnum does not get very old. And in its vital phase, it uses enormous energy for the annual flowering. From the age of about 15 at the latest, you must therefore grant him a pension.
Damaged root ball
Laburnum's root ball is relatively delicate due to its shallow spread and fleshy texture. A massive damage could actually lead to a failure to flower. In any case, avoid rough floor work under him. Root damage can also be caused by voles. Do the wobble test on the trunk. In the worst case, the shrub can no longer be saved.
