The giant sequoia can reach an incredible height of 80 meters. This growth height suggests that the plant also penetrates far below the surface of the earth. Surprisingly, contrary to the assumption, the roots show a relatively flat growth. They still take up space.

The sequoia is a heart root. The name comes from the way the sequoia roots grow. A heart shape would be recognizable in cross section. With this type of root system, the roots form in all directions. They vary in strength. The thick roots do not necessarily have to grow into the earth, but can also spread horizontally just below the surface of the earth.

Propagation of the roots of the sequoia

This is the case with the genus Sequoia. Its roots reach a maximum of one meter into the ground. Its extent in width is all the more extensive. The underground root system can cover a full 30 meters, which corresponds to an area of approximately 0.3 hectares. Accordingly, the substructure extends far beyond the dimensions of the crown.

Different root types

With regard to the growth and the strength of the roots of a sequoia, a distinction is made between:

  • the radicle (radicula)
  • taproots
  • and lateral roots

Only in rare cases, as with a few specimens in Central Europe, does the sequoia form taproots that reach down to a depth of 1.80 meters. This type of root, which develops from the radicle, i.e. the main root, typically shows vertical growth. Additional side roots emerge from the taproot.

Experience has shown that the coast redwood enters into a symbiosis with various types of fungi. One speaks here of mycorrhiza symbioses. These fungi bind to the fine roots and are completely harmless. After all, both living beings always benefit from a symbiosis.

Shallow Roots - Curse or Blessing?

You should not worry that your Sequoia suffers from an insufficient supply of nutrients due to the shallow roots. Applying fertilizer twice a year already covers the requirement. Storms, on the other hand, are a real problem. It is not uncommon to come across uprooted tribes in American national parks. At this sight, the first thing you realize is the dimensions of the sequoia underground.
