Would you like to enrich your garden with a very special plant? How about a sequoia? Tending to the American giant isn't all that difficult. With the care instructions from this article, a very special specimen will soon adorn your property.

A young sequoia needs some care

The care of the sequoia

pour

Although the sequoia is very easy to care for, it does not tolerate drought. Always keep the substrate moist to reduce susceptibility to fungal infections. Daily watering is recommended. In the warm summer months in particular, however, the requirement can also increase to several waterings a day. This is especially important when you are young. The fair measure is very important. Waterlogging in turn damages the sequoia. Here are three more tips that will save you effort and ensure an appropriate amount of water:

  • cover the soil around the trunk with a layer of bark mulch. This prevents evaporation and keeps the substrate moist for longer
  • a small ditch directs the irrigation water directly to the roots and thus optimizes the supply. A few centimeters are enough
  • use water that is as soft as possible, for example stagnant tap water or rainwater

Fertilize

Since the sequoia shoots up rapidly, it has a corresponding nutrient requirement. In the first year, the garden soil still provides a sufficient supply. From the second year, however, you should help with fertilizer. You can tell when the time is right when new shoots appear. Suitable substances are

  • Compost that you sprinkle about 2 cm thick on the substrate
  • or an organic mineral fertilizer that comes in stick form that they push into the soil

pruning

A pruning of the sequoia is usually not necessary. Only branches that are too narrow should be pruned out from time to time. But if you want to inhibit growth, a cut is a recommended measure.

hibernate

You should gradually get used to the fresh air of sequoia trees. If you have not yet planted your Sequoia in the ground, you must protect it from frost in winter. Store indoors, such as a garage or cool basement.

Protection from pests

The sequoia is susceptible to a particular fungal infection that initially causes the needles to turn brown, and later causes the tree to die off completely. This fungus usually enters the trunk through wounded areas in the bark. If you notice abrasions in the bark, you should seal them with foil or apply a special pesticide.

Bucket attitude

A special way of cultivating the sequoia is to keep it in a bucket. Please note that your Sequoia has an increased nutrient requirement. After the first fertilization in spring, a second application is recommended about three months later. You should also choose the pot large enough.
