Occasionally it may become necessary to replant a tree of life. It is possible that the previous location is not favorable or the thuja is in the way of redesigning the garden. What do you have to consider if you want to transplant thuja?

Transplanting large thujas is a courageous and energy-intensive undertaking

Can thuja be transplanted?

In principle, when transplanting thujas, the move is more successful as long as the trees are still young.

Older thujas have a pronounced root system that you can hardly get out of the ground without damaging them. You should also keep in mind that a mature thuja is very heavy and can hardly be moved without technical equipment.

With older thuja hedges, you should rather think about creating a new hedge and removing the old arborvitae from the garden.

The best season for transplanting thuja

If transplanting a thuja cannot be avoided, spring and early autumn are best. At another time of the year, the transfer is even more difficult and there is a risk that the tree of life will not grow again.

After transplanting in the spring, you need to water the thuja very frequently. If the tree of life is transplanted in early autumn, it needs winter protection because sometimes the roots have not yet sufficiently regenerated. In dry winters, you need to make sure the soil doesn't dry out.

Prepare the move well

A few days before transplanting, water the soil penetratingly. Then the thuja will be easier to dig up later.

Be careful not to damage roots when digging up

Dig out the soil around the tree of life and carefully lift out the root ball with the digging fork.

If the thuja needs to be transported to a remote location, wrap the root ball in burlap to keep it from drying out. Make sure there is enough soil clinging to the roots.

The new location for the tree of life

Choose the new location for the thuja very well. Replanting stresses the tree too much. Removing a thuja hedge is also associated with a lot of work and costs.

How to transplant thuja

  • Dig a planting hole twice the size of the root ball
  • Improve potting soil with compost, horn shavings (32.93€) or manure
  • Use thuja carefully
  • Fill in the planting hole
  • Shake the tree of life a little
  • face earth
  • water well
  • spread mulch layer if necessary

Care after transfer

After transplanting the thuja, you need to water it frequently. Occasional spraying of the leaves, especially in very dry times, has proven itself. However, do not spray directly in the midday sun.

Discoloration of the needles after transfer is normal. After about half a year, the tree of life should have gotten used to its new place and regain its old foliage color.

tips

Thuja needs a location that is as sunny as possible. It should be somewhat sheltered from the wind and not directly exposed to the midday sun.
