Great effects can not only be achieved with a large flower bed - even a small perennial bed with a size of between one and four square meters can become an eye-catcher in the garden. Of course, there are slightly different design rules in such a bed than in a larger one - after all, the plants should not appear crowded and steal the show from each other. With our tips you can create a floral miracle even from the smallest spot.

Even small flower beds can have a big impact

Create small flower beds attractively

The following tips will help you to make the small flower bed attractive.

location

You are free to choose the location, because basically there is no wrong place in the garden - just the wrong choice of plants. Think carefully about where you want to place your small flower bed and what the light, temperature and soil conditions are like there. A too heavy or sandy soil can be improved within certain limits, but you won't be able to shake the light conditions much. Fortunately, there is now a large selection of interesting flowering perennials for half-shady and shady locations - you can even use these to plant under the tree grate of a larger garden tree.

to form

Small flower beds, like large ones, can have very different shapes. Very narrow beds are often found in front of a house wall, a wall or a fence, while you can fit more square, semicircular or cake-shaped beds in garden corners. A round bed can be perfectly integrated in the middle of a lawn and acts as an eye-catcher. In principle, however, the shape of the flower bed should match the garden style and the selected location and create a harmonious overall picture.

plant selection

When choosing plants, you should consider the limited space, which is why it is better to refrain from very large perennials and prefer compact-growing leading perennials. A large perennial takes up an immense amount of space, so that you don't have many options for further planting - especially since many companion perennials only really come into their own when they are planted in groups. You also have to concentrate on the essentials in a small bed: all seasons cannot be covered here. Instead, you should coordinate the main flowering times of the perennials so that you can cover one or a maximum of two seasons.

tips

When planting tree discs, make sure that the perennials selected for the underplanting cannot build up too much root pressure. Use drought tolerant species.
