With their shrub or tree-like growth, the various varieties of the pear are suitable as an easy-care alternative to hedges made of conifers, beech and cherry laurel. With targeted pruning measures, service pear can be trained into a dense hedge within a few years.

The service pear as a hedge plant with advantages and disadvantages

The pear is basically quite suitable as a hedge plant, but it is not evergreen like many other classic hedge plants. From spring to autumn, too, a pear is to be regarded more as a wild fruit hedge with loose growth, so you should not expect an absolutely closed privacy screen around the property. On the other hand, pear trees as hedge plants also offer a number of advantages:

  • countless decorative flowers
  • edible fruits
  • Habitat for birds and insects
  • attractive autumn colors of the leaves

Choose the right variety

When choosing the plants for your hedge of service pear trees, you should make sure you choose the right variety. While the copper service pear forms a tree-like habit with a height of up to 6 m, the lower-growing spiked service pear and the common service pear are better suited for hedge planting. Of course, it also depends on what type of hedge you need in your garden. The relatively fast-growing copper pear can be the right choice if a tree-like, high hedge is to frame a property as a windbreak and opaque privacy is not important in the lower area of the plants.

Tip for planting a hedge of service pear trees: keep your distance

It can take a few years for the pear trees to branch out sufficiently through the cut. But don't let this tempt you into planting the young plants too densely. You should keep a planting distance of at least 50 cm between the plants so that the individual plants can really develop well.

tips

Rock pear roots are not very deep, but they spread their root system relatively far to the sides. You should think about this when planting a hedge along the property line and, if necessary, plan a little more distance to the neighboring property.
