Gravel beds not only look totally chic and modern, they also require very little maintenance. So it's no wonder that more and more garden fans are opting for this variant. However, it rarely works here without a bed edging that limits the gravel. But which lawn edge is suitable and matches the look?

There are various options for edging a gravel bed

Attractive edging stones

Concrete lawn edging stones are very good at preventing gravel from getting into the adjacent areas. There are stones that end at ground level as well as variants that are placed vertically in a bed of sand or mortar. These are a few centimeters higher than the edge of the floor and are therefore more suitable as borders laid flush.

The relocation

Vertical lawn edging stones almost always have to be concreted, because only a loamy, very heavy soil offers sufficient support. The individual steps are as follows:

  • Dig a trench about eight inches deep along the bed.
  • Concrete, consisting of four parts of coarse masonry sand and one part of cement, should not be too liquid.
  • Pour in a five centimeter layer of concrete.
  • Insert and fix curb stones.
  • Fill the sides with sand.
  • A paving hammer is recommended for alignment, as this does not damage the stones.
  • Cover with gravel towards the bed and apply some soil towards the lawn side.

Steel lawn edging

These fit optically very well into modern designed gardens. They are available in stainless steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, aluminum or antique steel with a beautifully morbid patina. This almost indestructible edging is made in such a way that additional anchoring is usually not necessary.

The relocation

  • Lay out and screw metal profiles.
  • If the ground is soft, you can hammer in the edges at a slight angle with a hammer. Place wooden board on the surface to avoid damaging it.
  • If the subsoil is compacted, use a spade to pre-cut and then install the edging.

Very attractive: the natural stone border

This edging picks up the look of the gravel bed and therefore harmonises very well. Unfortunately, this variant is not the most expensive. Cast stone made of cement looks confusingly similar to the natural stone edge, but is significantly cheaper.

tips

Vertical lawn edging stones have the disadvantage that they cannot mow directly at the boundary with a lawn mower and always have to rework with the trimmer. Lay a row of ground-level end stones in front of the vertical ones, catching the last stalk.
