A self-built fireplace in your own garden is the perfect place to spend a mild summer evening with family and friends. The crackling fire creates a romantic atmosphere, and long sticks can be used to grill stick bread or sausages over an open flame. However, there are a few important points to consider when setting up such a campfire.

There are different ways a fire pit can look like

Choice of location

This includes, for example, choosing a suitable location. In order not to endanger yourself and other people, the fireplace should be carefully planned and finished. In the immediate vicinity of an open fire, there must be nothing that is easily flammable - this also and especially includes shrubs such as trees and bushes, but also other bed plants (e.g. perennials). It goes without saying that houses, huts, etc. should also be at least 80 meters apart. Furthermore, no power or gas lines may run under the planned fireplace - otherwise there may be nasty surprises.

Create a simple fire pit

A simple fire pit is set up in no time. All you need is a spade, sand, large boulders and, of course, dry firewood.

  • Use the spade to dig out the fireplace about ten centimeters deep.
  • Now fill the hole with sand.
  • If possible, do not use pebbles - they can burst.
  • Surround the fireplace with large field stones.
  • These should prevent the fire from spreading, but should not be directly in the fire itself.
  • Field stones can also burst if the heat is too high.
  • Now stack the firewood on the sand.
  • Use different types of softwood and hardwood for this.

Brick fireplace

Of course, a brick fireplace is a bit more demanding. If possible, use refractory bricks for this, clinker or other burnt bricks are very suitable.

  • Mark out the area of the planned fireplace with the help of a cord.
  • Cut out the grass and soil about 10 centimeters deep with the spade.
  • Fill the resulting hole with sand.
  • Stack the stones to form a wall around the hearth you have cut out.
  • Mortar them carefully.

Only after the mortar has dried can you use the fireplace.

tips

If you don't want to create a fixed fireplace, you can use a fire bowl or a fire basket instead.
