Water in the garden is great fun for young and old. The pond is given a creative finishing touch with a splashing waterfall. You can build the decorative highlight yourself. Read how to do it here.

materials and preparatory work
The following materials are required to build a waterfall at the pond:
- pond liner and pond fleece
- Powerful pond pump with hose and accessories
- Sourcestone or Gargoyle
- topsoil and sand
- Broken stones, at least the size of a fist
Pile up the topsoil next to the pond to form a mound, at the top of which you will make a depression as a starting point for the waterfall. From this mini pond, you'll sculpt a steep, terraced moat toward the pond. This ditch does not have to be as deep as for a stream.
How to build the waterfall - step by step instructions
After the earthworks, fill the mini pond and ditch with a layer of sand about 5 cm thick. The layer of sand levels out unevenness and protects the pond liner from damage. Proceed with these steps:
- Lay out the mini pond and ditch with pond fleece
- Lay the pond liner up to 20 cm beyond the edges and a little way into the garden pond
- Guide the pump hose either under the pond liner or around the outside of the hill
- Connect the hose to the pond pump and source stone and carry out a test run
If the waterfall has proven to be functional after the test run, the decorative design is on the agenda. Stack the quarry stones in such a way that the soil and pond liner are hidden from view. Please stagger the walls without cross joints. Alternatively, you can build a dry wall whose joints can be planted using substrate pockets. Alternatively, give the waterfall wall reliable stability with mortar.
