Especially after a more extensive pruning, the trunk of a tree can suffer larger wounds, for example if a large branch has been removed directly at the base. But the tree trunk can also be injured by animal bites, after a storm or by wet, heavy snow. Fungi and other pathogens can enter through these wounds and cause damage to the tree.

Wound sealant yes or no?
In order to counteract this danger, it is advisable to apply a wound sealant. However, the experts do not agree on whether it makes sense to use it: some consider tree wax (€12.96) & Co. to be very useful, others cite studies that show that trees treated with wound sealants are even more susceptible to the penetration of lead to fungi and bacteria. Depending on the weather, the paint would burst open or even the bark could be detached. Experience has shown that you should actually leave smaller wounds to dry and otherwise be left alone - this is where the tree can use its own wound healing powers. However, larger open wound areas require treatment to support the self-healing powers. The agents can also be used in the case of cuts during a winter cut and when the bark has flaked off.
How to apply the wound sealant correctly
You can use tree wax, for example, as a wound closure agent, but also Lac Balsam or a resin-wax mixture. Only use agents with the seal of approval from the Federal Biological Institute. Apply this as follows:
- Clean the wound carefully from dirt etc.
- Cut as straight an area as possible.
- Use sharp and freshly infected tool.
- Otherwise you carry germs into the wound yourself.
- Do not apply the wound closure to the entire wound.
- It is usually sufficient to treat only the edge.
Be sure to pay attention to cleanliness and hygiene when doing this work. If possible, wear disposable gloves and do not touch the wound with your bare fingers.
tips
Especially after a winter storm, severe breakage can occur, in which case the tree can no longer be saved. However, you do not have to dispose of it, but - after appropriate treatment - reuse it for various construction projects.
