Ice plant (lat. Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) is only conditionally hardy. It tolerates frost moderately, down to around -5 °C or -10 °C. Therefore, it should only overwinter outside in a mild area, preferably well protected from frost.

The Eiskraut tolerates slightly below zero

Mesembryanthemum can also be kept as a houseplant, then hibernation is unnecessary. The ice plant is also a tasty salad or vegetable plant. As such, it does best in the garden.

If hibernation is not possible or only possible with great effort, you can alternatively hibernate cuttings or sow the iceberg again next spring. It is often even traded as an annual plant.

The essentials in brief:

  • moderately hardy to about - 5 °C or - 10 °C
  • only overwinter outside in a sheltered place
  • ideal: frost-free winter quarters
  • alternatively: overwinter the cuttings or sow them again in spring

tips

If you do not live in a mild area, it is better to overwinter your ice plant in a frost-free winter quarters.
