Who says you can only grow fresh vegetables in the garden? Instead of beds, herbs, tomatoes or radishes can also be grown in tubs - which do not necessarily have to be on the balcony. Provided that no bees etc. are necessary for the fruiting, delicious vegetables can also be grown in the living room.

Vegetables can be preferred on the windowsill or pulled out completely

Suitable types of vegetables for the apartment

There are many types and varieties of vegetables that also thrive well in an indoor climate and bear fruit. After all, vegetables can also be successfully grown in a greenhouse. Only fruit trees can hardly be cultivated in the living room until they are ready for harvest, since there are no bees and other insects for fertilization. In addition, Mediterranean citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges or tangerines as well as avocados are difficult to grow indoors - the maintenance effort is immense, and experience has shown that such mini trees feel better in the fresh air.

However, annual vegetables in particular can be cultivated excellently on the windowsill:

  • many herbs such as parsley, basil, chives, thyme, cress…
  • Tomatoes, including the small-fruited varieties and traffic light tomatoes
  • Traffic light tomatoes grow in a hanging basket (€11.99) and simply tend downwards
  • Paprika and relatives (e.g. chili, pepperoni)
  • Radishes (quick harvest!)
  • Carrots and kohlrabi (in sufficiently deep flower pots or troughs)
  • Zucchini (requires very large planters!)
  • Various cut and pick lettuce, lamb's lettuce and rocket
  • ginger
  • Leek plants such as onions, garlic, leeks
  • Cucumbers, especially snake cucumbers (feel better in the greenhouse anyway)
  • Beans (runner beans, runner beans…) and peas

Location and care for apartment vegetables

If you want to successfully grow vegetables in your home, you should be aware of three things:

1. Vegetable plants need a lot of light to ripen the fruit. South windows are ideal.
2. The plants must be watered and fertilized regularly. Use organic vegetable fertilizer.(7.49€)
3. Regular airing is also very important - as in the greenhouse.

In addition, only a few vegetables can be grown indoors all year round. As a rule, yields can only be achieved between March and October, most plants pause in winter - with a few exceptions, such as many herbs, lettuce or radishes. But you can often harvest three or even four times during the growing season.

tips

It is best to place the tubs with the vegetable plants directly in front of a window or glass door. If the summer turns out to be rainy and cold (and therefore dark), an additional plant light makes sense.
