When talking about succulents, they are a drought-tolerant plant type that is represented in numerous families and genera. The selection of beautiful species that are so robust and hardy at the same time that they can be cultivated outside without hesitation is correspondingly wide-ranging. This selection introduces you to proven succulents for the garden.

The houseleek also thrives in German gardens

These cacti stand up to frost and snow

The following cacti are not only masters at storing water, but also have a stable outdoor hardiness:

  • Opuntia (prickly pear cactus): from 10 to 100 cm growth height and hardy to impressive - 22 degrees Celsius
  • Echinocereus (Hedgehog Column Cacti): e.g. B. E. baileyi and E. Reichenbachii with a winter hardiness down to - 32 degrees Celsius
  • Escorbaria vivipara forma (globe cactus): small in diameter and huge in its frost hardiness down to - 25 degrees Celsius

While there are numerous types and varieties of the popular prickly pear cacti that you can plant outside, only the specimens mentioned are hardy among the hedgehog columnar cacti and spherical cacti. For example, the popular golden ball cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) cannot withstand temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

Houseleeks also feel comfortable outside

The diverse family of succulents includes the wonderful houseleek genus, which causes a sensation in the garden with its magnificent leaf rosettes and wonderful flowers. Their preference for fresh air and sunshine even goes so far that Sempervivum are only conditionally suitable as indoor plants.

Sedums are very comfortable outside

Without sedum hens, many a sunny, meager spot in the garden would remain without floral decoration. With more than 420 species, the Sedum genus has suitable succulents for every design requirement. Premium varieties offer growth heights of between 10 and 40 cm, inspire with picturesque leaf rosettes in iridescent colors and enchant with magnificent flowers in summertime. In winter, sedum plants can withstand temperatures as low as -23 degrees Celsius if they are protected from permanent wetness.

tips

Caring for your succulents outdoors is even easier than caring for your indoor succulent plants. Since Mother Nature takes care of the water supply in the bed, the watering can is only used in the event of prolonged drought. The nutrient supply is reduced to an organic start fertilization in May with leaf compost or horn shavings. (32.93 €)
