Fences separate your property from the outside world. But they also serve as a decorative element, which is why the possible variations are almost endless. However, the type, colour, material and height of the border should blend in harmoniously with the surroundings.

Fences separate and keep unwanted guests away from the vegetables

Fences are more than just property boundaries

A fence is more than just marking your own territory. It also protects against looks, two- and four-legged intruders, dust, noise and wind. Depending on the region and taste, there are numerous variants of fences:

  • plain, rustic wooden fences, sometimes (white) painted
  • Metal fences, sometimes set on a low wall
  • fence panels suspended between posts dominate
  • Bars and spikes are often artistically decorated as decorative elements

By the way: If you build a fence, you should of course not forget the matching gate. There are many options here too, such as an arch entwined with climbing roses.

What are the options for fencing the vegetable garden?

Fences can be made of very different materials: If you like it natural and rustic, you can use wood. Of course, metal fences are much more durable, while living hedges provide excellent protection not only from intruders, but also from prying eyes.

metal fences

The range of metal fences ranges from simple chain link fences (€34.49) to artistically shaped wrought iron fences.

  • Wire mesh fences are inexpensive and can easily be covered with plants
  • Bar fencing comes in a variety of designs. They are also suitable as trellis.

Fences made of natural materials

Natural materials such as wood, wickerwork or bamboo also offer a wide range of unusual design options:

  • Depending on the design, picket or picket fences appear rustic (natural) or more elegant (painted white). The degree of transparency results from a more or less dense arrangement of the slats.
  • In contrast to picket fences, plank fences are always low and only offer symbolic, but no real protection.
  • Scissor or lattice fences (e.g. the popular hunter's fence) are also obstacles that are easy to overcome and are therefore primarily used as enclosures.
  • Wicker fences are made of thin wooden slats or wicker. They form a very good privacy screen and are ideal for natural gardens.
  • Fences or partitions made of bamboo cane are used as demarcation in Asian-style gardens.

tips

Instead of a metal or wooden fence, you can of course opt for a living hedge. Many suitable shrubs form an excellent barrier and a no less great privacy screen - and they also look beautiful.
