Column cactus offshoots are primarily grown from cuttings as this method is relatively uncomplicated. Sowing is of course also possible. What you have to consider when propagating columnar cacti.

The columnar cactus can easily be propagated by cuttings

Multiply columnar cactus: cut cuttings or sow seeds

Column cacti usually do not flower in room culture. You must therefore buy seeds from specialist retailers. It is easier and faster to grow offshoots from cuttings that you cut from existing plants.

How to sow columnar cacti

The seed is sown thinly in prepared trays in early spring, not covering. The surface must be kept slightly moist.

Place the cultivation vessels in a location that is as bright and warm as possible at 20 to 28 degrees. Cover the jars with plastic wrap to prevent drying out.

As soon as the seedlings have emerged, they are pricked out and later transplanted into individual pots.

Cut cuttings and let dry

  • cut cuttings
  • Allow interfaces to dry
  • Prepare seed pots (16.68€).
  • Insert cuttings
  • stabilize with chopsticks
  • set up bright and warm
  • water only from the side or from below

Cut the cuttings for propagation in spring or summer. Use a sharp, clean knife and make the cut straight on a thinner spot.

Stand the cuttings upright in an empty jar lined with cotton at the bottom. It can take up to two months for the cut ends to dry sufficiently.

Prepare pots with well-drained substrate. Coconut soil or cactus soil, which you also mix with quartz sand (€15.85), is well suited.

Be careful when watering

Stick the columnar cactus cuttings only slightly at the top of the substrate. Tie the offshoots carefully to wooden sticks so that the columnar cactus stands up straight.

Do not water the cuttings immediately after plugging them in. After a week, only moisten the substrate at the edge of the pot so that the cutting does not get wet. Alternatively, you can also fill the coaster with some water. It is absorbed by the substrate.

tips

There are about 25 types of cacti that are attributed to the pillar cactus. In their natural home, columnar cacti can grow up to 15 meters high. Cultivated in pots, they can reach a height of one meter or more in just a few years.
