It's so easy to multiply a leaf cactus
You can propagate a leaf cactus in two ways. Either take cuttings or sow seeds. Propagation from cuttings is much easier and is therefore usually preferred.
In addition, the cuttings result in completely identical young plants, while propagation via seeds is not certain what the future leaf cactus will look like and what color the flowers will be.
Grow leaf cactus from cuttings
- Take cuttings in spring or summer
- Allow interfaces to dry
- put in prepared pots
- set up bright and warm
- keep moist
Shoots of about 15 centimeters in length are suitable as cuttings. Cut them off with a sharp knife. Let the interfaces dry for at least a day so that no mold can form later.
Prepare pots of soil for leaf cacti. Ideally, the substrate consists of a mixture of two-thirds garden soil and one-third quartz sand.(15.85€) It must be well permeable to water.
Plant the cuttings about three to four inches deep in the ground. Stabilize them with small wooden sticks to keep them straight. Once new leaves appear, continue tending the offshoots like adult plants.
Propagation via seeds is tedious
A small indoor greenhouse is best for propagating leaf cacti from seed. Spread the seed thinly on coconut soil. The leaf cactus needs light to germinate, so the seed must not be covered with soil.
Keep the surface moist but not wet. Place the closed greenhouse bright and warm. Avoid direct sunlight.
After emergence, the young plants are pricked out carefully and later transplanted into suitable pots.
