There are various types and breeds of bell heather. Erica gracilis, also known as Cape heather, usually flowers in autumn, from August to October, while Irish bell heather (bot. Daboecia cantabrica) flowers from July to September.

If you add various cultivated forms to your garden, you can extend the flowering period even further. Erica hiemalis, with its finely hairy leaves, only flowers in winter. The white or red flowers of Erica ventricosa appear in spring and remain until autumn. However, the bell heather is not hardy.
