The easy-care coffee plant can be propagated quite well, but you need some time and patience. Your self-grown coffee plants will only flower and bear fruit, the so-called coffee cherries, after a few years.

Growing a coffee plant from seed
The seeds of the coffee plant are not germinable for very long, so they have to be sown quite fresh. If you already have a coffee plant that is already bearing fruit, then you can put its seeds to good use after a thorough cleaning. Otherwise you will certainly find what you are looking for in well-stocked specialist shops or with special mail-order companies.
Seeds will germinate more easily if soaked in warm water for a few hours. Then press the seeds into pots with potting soil without spreading more soil over them. Place your seed pots (€16.68) in a warm place and keep the soil moist but not wet. Temperatures between 25 °C and 30 °C are ideal.
Propagation by cuttings
It is best to cut top cuttings from your coffee plant for propagation. You can also use appropriate clippings from the last pruning if this has just been done. The cuttings should be about three to four inches long and have some leaves.
It is best to place the cuttings individually in small pots with potting soil, so you do not have to separate the young plants with their sensitive roots again. For these roots to form, your cuttings need an even temperature of around 25°C and high humidity.
To ensure both, stretch a transparent film over the pots or place them in a greenhouse. Air the cuttings for a few minutes every day to prevent mold from forming or the cuttings from rotting. However, there must be no draughts.
The essentials in brief:
- Germination and cultivation temperature: approx. 25 °C
- ideal: warm, humid climate
- Cut head cuttings
- Cuttings are best cut in spring
- Just press the seeds down, do not cover them with soil
- possibly use room or mini greenhouse
tips
Constant temperature and humidity are required for the cultivation of seeds or cuttings of the coffee plant. If this is not the case in your home, place the seed pots in a small greenhouse.
