The care of the coffee plant is really quite simple, as long as it feels comfortable in its location. She wants to be watered and fertilized regularly. She likes to be warm and bright, in a wind-protected place or free from drafts.

The coffee plant is only fertilized in spring and summer

How do I care for my freshly bought coffee plant?

When you buy your coffee plant new, it is difficult to tell how much fertilizer it has received so far. If the container is quite small, it is best to repot the coffee plant. On this occasion, replace the soil and lay a drainage layer of coarse gravel or broken pottery. In this way you avoid harmful waterlogging.

As a substrate, choose normal potting soil or potting soil under which you may mix a little sand or clay granules. Water the coffee plant well and place the pot in a warm, bright place, but at least not in the blazing sun for the time being. In the next few weeks, the plant only needs fresh water with as little lime as possible.

How often do I need to fertilize my coffee plant?

In summer or from April to September, you should fertilize your coffee plant about every three to four weeks. You can simply mix liquid fertilizer into the irrigation water. Long-term fertilizers are available as sticks, for example. Put them in the ground close to the roots of the coffee plant. Please note the package leaflet. Slow-release fertilizer often only needs to be applied once a year.

Do not fertilize your coffee plant at all during the hibernation period, as fertilizer during this period does more harm than good. If the coffee plant gets too many nutrients in winter, it easily develops horny shoots that can weaken the plant. Even just repotted, your coffee plant does not need any additional fertilizer for quite a while, because the fresh soil contains enough nutrients for a few months.

The essentials in brief:

  • Do not fertilize freshly repotted coffee plants
  • Fertilize about once a month in summer
  • alternatively use long-term fertilizer
  • don't fertilize at all in winter

tips

If your coffee plant has just received fresh soil, then it will not need any additional fertilizer for the next few months.
