While it is a common read, the golden fruit palm, or areca palm, is not poisonous. You can therefore grow them indoors or outside on the terrace even if children and pets such as cats are part of the family.

The golden fruit palm contains no toxins

Golden fruit palms are not poisonous

Since the golden fruit palm does not contain any toxins, it is one of the indoor plants that you can safely grow. There is no risk of poisoning from the palm tree, neither for children nor for pets.

However, you should be absolutely sure that the palm you are caring for is in fact a golden fruit palm (Dypsis lutescens). There are some quite toxic palm species that look very similar to the Areca palm.

If you are not sure which type of palm tree you are cultivating, you should exercise caution if children and pets live in the apartment. Place such palm trees in a place where they are inaccessible to children and animals. Also, keep in mind that the pots are quite heavy and can cause injury if they tip over.

Clear away plant remains immediately

Even if the Areca palm is not poisonous, you should not leave fallen leaves or cut shoots. Otherwise, small children crawling around and curious pets could put the parts of the plant in their mouths and choke on them.

The leaf tips are often quite pointed and sharp. Therefore, place the golden fruit palm in such a way that nobody can injure themselves on the pointed fronds.

tips

Cat lovers do not have to worry that the four-legged friends can get poisoned by the golden fruit palm. Nevertheless, the Areca palm should be protected from cats. The eaten fronds do not look nice and quickly turn brown.
