Older Araucaria trees that have been growing in the garden for several years survive cold winters quite well. Younger trees, on the other hand, should be protected from frost. Monkey trees grown in pots must always be wintered frost-free.

Araucaria overwinter outdoors
In addition to the cold, the dryness of frozen soil in particular causes problems for the monkey tree. Young trees in particular need good winter protection. Their roots are not yet mature enough to survive a harsh winter.
Therefore, place a thick layer of mulch made of straw, leaves, lawn clippings or similar materials around the tree.
Cover the tree with jute, brushwood or winter fleece to protect the needles from frost.
Overwinter the monkey tree in a tub
If you keep Araucaria in a bucket, place the container in a bright, frost-free place over the winter. The temperatures should not fall below ten degrees.
tips
If you want to grow offshoots from seeds, only buy seeds that come from trees growing in Germany. These are rather hardy and cope better with frost.
