The rosewood tree provides a tropical flair on the terrace or in the room. Unfortunately, the light blue flowers rarely appear in our latitudes, since the non-hardy tree has to reach a minimum height of two meters. Still, it's worth pulling the decorative tree. Growing tips.

Propagation from cuttings is not easy

Methods of growing rosewood trees

A rosewood tree is easiest to grow from seed. However, you have to buy the seeds, since the tree usually does not bloom and therefore no seeds are formed.

A little more complicated but also possible is growing rosewood from cuttings that you can cut from an existing plant.

Grow rosewood tree from seed

  • Soak seeds for 24 hours
  • Prepare the culture vessel
  • sow seeds
  • cover lightly with soil
  • moisten well
  • Cover plastic film
  • keep warm and bright but not sunny
  • prick later
  • plant out

The best time to plant new rosewood trees is early spring in February or March. Prepare a seed pot that you fill with potting soil or even better with coconut fiber.

After sowing, it only takes a week or two for the seeds to germinate. When the seedlings are big enough, prick them out.

Later, the young rosewood trees are placed in individual pots and cared for like adult plants.

Propagating rosewood trees by cuttings

Propagation from cuttings is not that easy, but it works quite often. You need pieces of shoots about 10 to 15 centimeters long that have at least three pairs of leaves. The shoots must not be lignified.

Prepare seed pots (€16.68) with potting soil and insert the cuttings. Keep the substrate moist but not too wet. It is good if you put a transparent plastic bag over the pots. Then the cuttings cannot dry out. Air the bag regularly to prevent mold from forming.

Roots will develop within a few weeks in a bright, warm but not full sun spot.

tips

The palisander tree tolerates pruning very well. However, you should not cut it in the first few years. Only when growing as a bonsai do you have to tackle it earlier with the scissors.
