Cacti like to spend the summer outdoors
Time window opens in May
Most cactus species have not learned to survive in the cold. Therefore, even robust desert cacti hibernate at temperatures between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius. Since the Central European winter can still surprise us with nightly ground frosts until the beginning/mid-May, cacti ideally only move outside after the ice saints in mid-May.
From mid-April, there is nothing to prevent your cacti from enjoying the warm rays of sunshine outside during the day. The succulents should spend the nights behind glass until the middle/end of May.
With a minimum-maximum thermometer you play it safe when choosing an appointment. The device has a flag that remains at the minimum temperature during the night. You can read this the next morning. If the night-time temperature no longer falls below 10 degrees Celsius, your cacti can stay outside day and night.
Acclimatization prevents sunburn - Here's how
Cacti should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Despite their sometimes strong epidermis, the exotic plants suffer from sunburn. You can prevent this damage by letting the plants go through a hardening phase. That is how it goes:
- For 1 to 2 weeks initially place in a semi-shady place
- Then assign desert cacti to a sunny location
- Leave the leaf cacti in a semi-shady place
Outdoor cacti cannot do without rain protection. Therefore, please choose a place under the awning or an eaves. A small superstructure made of milky panes of glass or greenhouse film (€15.90) also protects your cacti from pouring rain and the resulting waterlogging.
