Reason enough to devote yourself to the right species and varieties as a beginner in the cacti hobby. We introduce you to beginner-suitable cacti, with which you will not be shipwrecked.

The gold pillar is a good choice for beginners

Rock cactus - big figure with small claims

As a beginner in the fascinating world of cacti, you start small when it comes to caring for them, but this does not mean that your first cactus has to be small in stature. The rock cactus with the botanical name Cereus peruvianus monstrosus is characterized by these attributes:

  • Majestic growth up to the ceiling
  • Dense thorns on the branched, irregular body
  • Nocturnal blooms from June to September

The imposing rock cactus wants a warm, full sun. From October to March it stays in the bright, cool place to create the buds for the next flowering period at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius.

Bird's Nest Cactus - little gem for the beginner

Would you like a cactus to start with that doesn't immediately outgrow you? Then the bird's nest cactus with the botanical name Dolichothele camptotricha is a good choice. The spiked dwarf advertises itself with these properties:

  • Growth height 5 to 10 cm
  • Growth width 5 to 7 cm
  • Spherical shape with 1.8 cm long warts, 1.5 cm long yellow bristles and 4 cm long spines on the edge
  • White, fragrant funnel-shaped flowers in spring

The sunnier the location, the more colorful the yellow thorn dress. A bright, cool hibernation contributes significantly to flowering induction.

Gold column - the highlight for the windowsill

This cactus has the botanical name Notocactus leninghausii. It not only shines in a golden-yellow thorn dress, but also forms the golden mean between a mighty rock cactus and a delicate bird's nest cactus.

  • Growth height 20 to 25 cm
  • Cylindrical habit with golden thorns
  • Yellow flowers in early summer

Like all desert cacti, the gold pillar loves a warm, full sun from spring to autumn. From May to September preferably on the balcony in a rain-protected place.

tips

Water your cacti only when they are well dried. Pour the lime-free water on the substrate as long as it is completely soaked. From March to September, add some cactus fertilizer to the water every other watering. During the cool winter period the plants do not receive any fertilizer and are only watered a little every 4 to 6 weeks.
