In the household there are a lot of objects from which you can build a fully functional greenhouse for your own plant cultivation in just a few simple steps. In addition to cardboard egg cartons, empty sales packaging made of transparent plastic is ideal for sowing seeds.

A mini greenhouse is easy to make yourself

If the rearing boxes offered by specialist retailers are too expensive, you can easily build your own mini greenhouse (€7.95) from a whole range of household items that are no longer needed. A particularly good idea, by the way, if you have children with whom you Enthusiasm for growing plants want to encourage a little. The ideal handicraft time for such small greenhouses is the last few weeks of February or the beginning of March. This gives the seedlings enough time to develop stably before they are planted outdoors.

What egg wrappers and empty plastic cups are good for

In an egg pallet that is no longer needed, you can grow six to ten plants without much effort. To do this, the lid is first removed and the depressions filled with soil that is not too moist. As a composition of the soil, in the event that tomatoes or cucumbers are to be grown, we recommend the following mixture:

  • 40 percent normal garden soil;
  • 30 percent mature compost
  • 15 percent each peat and sandy soil

Seeds do not always have to cost something

It is particularly inexpensive to tinker with the greenhouse if seeds from last summer's harvest are available for raising the young plants. The best breeding results are achieved when seeds are taken from the fruits which are Traders at the weekly market come. One grain per bowl and no more

Press each granule a few millimeters deep into the soil and then seal the small opening. Moist soil must not be cast on separately. Instead of the detached lid, the box now gets an old freezer bag (punch out some ventilation openings with a hole punch beforehand!). Finally, just place your mini house on a sunny window sill.

tips

When the first delicate green becomes visible, the plastic bag can be omitted for a few hours during the day and until just before sunset. Don't water the young plants directly either, just keep the soil moist with an old spray bottle.
