To create a lavishly flowering and wonderfully fragrant hedge, the butterfly bush is a good choice. With a growth height of up to 300 cm, the easy-care Buddleja davidii functions as a flowering bulwark throughout the summer. Read here what you should pay attention to when planting.

Butterfly bushes can grow several meters high

Planting time is in spring

Butterfly bushes grown in the container form a magnificent hedge in the same year if they are planted in spring. As soon as the ground has completely thawed and no more severe frosts are to be expected, the window for planting opens. In regions with mild winters, plant the young plants in the ground as early as autumn.

Wide range of site conditions

In order to fulfill the hopes of a magnificent flowering hedge, the following site conditions set the course:

  • Sunny and sheltered location
  • Nutrient-rich, humus-rich and well-drained soil
  • Slightly acidic, neutral to alkaline pH

Ideally, the soil at the location for the hedge is moderately dry to fresh, because a butterfly bush does not do well with excess moisture.

In two rows it becomes lush and opaque

Where space permits, we recommend planting in two rows and staggered. In the first row choose a planting distance of about 70 cm. Lay out the second row at a distance of 90 to 100 cm from the front row. Here you place each butterfly bush in a gap, so that there is a planting distance of 70 cm.

It's so easy to plant a butterfly bush

Before you pull a young butterfly bush out of the container, soak it with normal water until no more air bubbles rise. Enriching the excavation with compost and horn shavings (€32.93) will stimulate rooting and growth. Please keep the previous planting depth, press the soil firmly for a good soil contact and water.

tips

The linchpin for perfect care as a hedge is an annual pruning in early spring. Cut back all Buddleia to 30 cm. A butterfly bush sprout so rapidly from every branch with at least 2 eyes that it has reached its majestic size in time for the beginning of the flowering period.
