In good substrate and in the right location, Anturiums develop splendidly, continuously produce deep green leaves and new flowers almost all year round. If the conditions are less than ideal or if there are mistakes in the care, the ornamental plant may suddenly develop yellow and later brown leaves.

The anthurium resents care mistakes

Brown spots can be caused by:

  • Unfavorable lighting conditions
  • Substrate not tailored to the needs of the plant
  • Watered too much
  • over-fertilization

The right location

As an epiphyte, the flamingo flower needs a lot of light, but it does not like direct sunlight and reacts to this by turning yellow or browning of the foliage. Place the plant preferably in a sunny window or shade the flamingo flower on sunny days.

Wrong substrate

Anturiums do not form a widely branched root ball like many plants, but a main root shoot with small secondary roots, similar to those of the orchid. The roots need a lot of light and air. They do not like compact potting soil at all and the flamingo flower gets brown leaves.

If this is the cause of the leaf discoloration, transplant the plant into orchid soil or mix the potting soil with loosening Styrofoam balls or expanded clay.(19.73€)

Watered too much

Anthuriums are very sensitive to waterlogging. If you water too much, root rot occurs quite often. Due to the damaged root system, the plant can hardly absorb any liquid, the leaves turn brown and dry up.

In this case, repot the plant as quickly as possible and remove the root parts affected by rot. Water much less in the future and only when the substrate feels dry after the thumb test.

over-fertilization

Like all plants, the flamingo flower needs nutrients, but at the same time it is quite frugal. If too much fertilizer is applied, this error in care is acknowledged with brown discoloration of the leaves. It is sufficient to provide the plant with half the dosage of a commercially available liquid fertilizer every 14 days.

tips

Yellow or brown leaves look unattractive. Although the anthurium does not usually need to be cut back, you should cut it off with a sharp knife.
