The repotting of the easy-care Canary date palm should be a regular part of the program. The palm grows relatively quickly out of its previous pot. Changing the substrate also ensures that the Canary date palm is well supplied with nutrients.

The Canary Date Palm should be repotted once a year

When does the Canary Date Palm have to be repotted?

At the latest when the pot for the Canary date palm has become too small, you should think about repotting the palm tree. The plant is pushed upwards by its taproots so that the roots protrude over the edge of the pot.

Even if the pot or tub is still sufficient, it is worth repotting the Canary date palm every year. The old pot is reused and only the old soil is replaced with fresh substrate.

The best time for repotting is early spring after wintering.

Choose the right planter

Canary date palms form long, sometimes very strong taproots. That is why deep tubs and pots are particularly suitable for these palm trees.

The new planter should not only be larger in diameter than the old pot, but also in depth. Only then will the roots have enough space.

How to repot the Canary Date Palm

  • Carefully pot the Canary date palm
  • tap off old substrate
  • prepare new planter
  • insert palm
  • Do not press the substrate too hard
  • pour on

When repotting the Canary Date Palm you have to be very careful not to damage the taproots. If the roots break, this can lead to the palm tree dying.

Shake off the old substrate. You can also spray the roots with a not too harsh spray to remove the used soil. Then put them in the prepared planter and fill it up with soil until the palm tree has a good stand again.

Then continue to care for the Canary date palm as usual. However, you must not fertilize them in the first few months after moving, so that the palm is not over-fertilized.

tips

You can easily put together the substrate for the Canary date palm yourself. You need compost, which you mix with gravel, sand, expanded clay (€19.73) or lava granules (€13.99). This palm soil does not sag as quickly as many conventional substrates that are offered for palm trees.
