With sharp spikes along the edges of the leaves, the bromeliad often has clearly visible reinforcement, which must be taken into account when caring for it. Consequently, the question is obvious whether the tropical pineapple plants are also equipped with toxic ingredients. Find out here to what extent a bromeliad is harmful to humans and animals.

Bromeliad is not poisonous - with one exception
Prudent home gardeners usually approach a bromeliad with protective gloves so as not to injure themselves on the spiked edges of the leaves. Additional precautionary measures are not to be observed, as the tropical jewelry does not contain any toxic ingredients. If, on the other hand, you succeed in the feat of growing a pineapple, the only exception of a slight poison content in the kingdom of bromeliads applies:
- Unripe pineapples cause stomach cramps and diarrhea in sensitive people
- Pregnant women may miscarry after eating an unripe fruit
Before you eat a pineapple fruit, please check the degree of ripeness. A ripe fruit gives off an aromatic scent. Their leaves are green and juicy. Ideally, individual leaves can be pulled out of the tuft of leaves without any effort. As a precaution, also subject store-bought pineapples to this test. On the plantations, the fruits are always harvested unripe and treated with ethylene during transport for the ripening process. Of course, this plan doesn't always work out.
tips
Instead of spreading fear and terror with poisonous ingredients, the bromeliad offers numerous microorganisms a protected habitat. With their pretty leaves, most bromeliads form a funnel (€4.85) in which water and humus collect. This creates a mini pond that insects, tadpoles and other animals will appreciate.
