Without living green, rooms often appear bare and not very comfortable. Unlike a few years ago, when plants only adorned the window sills, plants are now also used for interior design. Palm trees in particular are extremely popular because of their beautiful fronds. In order for the Mediterranean ambassadors to thrive as well as desired in the pot, their special requirements must be met.

Palm trees create a relaxed atmosphere in the apartment

light and temperature requirements

In the wild, palm trees usually grow in very sunny areas. Therefore, place the pot in the immediate vicinity of the window. Here, too, the light is not always sufficient during the dark season. A plant lamp switched on by the hour (€21.99) helps.

The temperature requirements of the plants vary depending on the variety. Mountain palms, for example, can be kept cool, while other species such as the coconut palm require a lot of heat.

humidity

In heated rooms, the air is often very dry. Even for palm trees from dry areas, the humidity here can be too low, the leaves turn brown tips and then die. There are several ways to effectively improve the indoor climate:

  • Spray the plant daily with lime-free water.
  • Choose a very large pot. In this place a brick on which the palm tree is placed. Fill in liquid but only so much that the planter is not damp.
  • Install an indoor fountain or humidifier.

pour

How much water the bucket palm needs depends on the species and on how much substrate is left in the pot. A good tip is to follow the old plant care rule: do the thumb test first and water whenever the top inches feel dry.

Fertilize

Palm trees are quite sensitive to over-fertilization. Fertilization is only done during the growth phase in the summer months:

  • Slow-growing strains receive half the dosage indicated on the packaging.
  • For fast-growing species, add the full concentration to the irrigation water.

It is sufficient to fertilize every 14 days.

repot

Palm trees don't need to be repotted too often. You only need a new planter about every two to three years.

Which pots are suitable?

Since many types of palm trees form very long stalks and large fronds, the pot must be sufficiently stable and heavy. Plastic containers usually do not meet these requirements; terracotta or clay pots are better. Also make sure you have a large floor space. Although very pretty to look at, cylindrical vessels are often not firm enough.

The right substrate

Specialist shops have ready-mixed soil that meets the needs of most palm species well. Alternatively, you can make the substrate yourself from potting soil and flakes.

tips

Palm trees grow very slowly in pots, often forming no more than two or many fronds per year. Mistakes in care can be fatal for this reason, as they do not grow together for a long time. Therefore, check the plants at least weekly for pest infestation or diseases and fight them consistently.
