Moss is not one of the sprinters in the plant kingdom. In order to get growth going in the garden, you can make a contribution by choosing the right location and a suitable substrate. We explain how this works here.

Moss grows best in the shade

This is how movement comes into the moss growth

Native moss species achieve their optimum in low-light, humid locations at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. In the dry, full sun, however, you will wait in vain for the fluffy green carpet to grow quickly. If you also settle moss on one of the following substrates, the rootless spore plant will no longer be so reserved:

  • A moist, poor soil with an acidic pH of less than 5.5
  • Ideally a 5-8 cm, lightly compacted substrate layer of peat and sand
  • On an inorganic base moistened with liquid leaf compost

Alternatively, you can make a viscous mixture from crushed, washed pieces of moss and buttermilk and spread it over a suitable surface.
