Traditionally, indoor and other potted plants are planted in soil that has a different composition depending on the plant species. Some plants prefer a humus-rich soil, others like it rather poor in nutrients and sandy. However, the indoor gardener must always carefully care for his plants and ensure the right amount of water and nutrients. On the other hand, if you tend to forget this or travel frequently, you can use a simpler hydroponic system. Even moisture-sensitive plants such as bow hemp can be cared for in such a way.

Bow hemp can also be grown hydroponically

What is hydroponics and how does it work?

Soil is not absolutely necessary for the healthy growth of plants - light, air, water and nutrients are much more important. On the other hand, the plant only needs soil so that it can find a footing in it with its roots. However, this function can be fulfilled just as well with inorganic materials such as expanded clay balls. This substrate serves as a foundation for the plant, but in some forms of hydroponics it also serves as a water reservoir. However, the regular form of hydroponics provides for this system:

  • The plant is in an inner pot filled with suitable granules.
  • A water level indicator is also installed in it.
  • The inner pot is placed in a planter filled with water.
  • The water level indicator lets you know when it's time to water again.
  • It is always poured into the cachepot.
  • Only special fertilizers for hydroponics are used for fertilizing.

Which substrate is suitable for bower hemp?

Make sure that the substrate is as fine-grained as possible. Since arch hemp has very fine roots, these do not find a good hold in larger balls.

Planting and caring for bow hemp in hydroponics

If you want to convert your sheet hemp to hydroponics, it is best to repot the plant in spring.

  • Get the arch hemp out of its pot
  • and carefully remove all soil.
  • The roots must be completely exposed.
  • Now place the bare root ball in the inner pot,
  • as well as the water level indicator
  • and fill up the pot with the hydroponic substrate.
  • Make sure that all gaps are well filled.
  • To do this, gently tap the pot on the tabletop.
  • Now place the inner in the planter.
  • Make sure that the water level indicator is at maximum "minimum".
  • Only fill in more water in exceptional situations (e.g. if you are away for a long time).

tips

Plants in hydroponics are only repotted when the pot has become too small. Instead, replace the first one to two centimeters of the substrate every year and wash it under clear running water.
