Orchids are just as opulent in a vase as they are as a houseplant on the windowsill. To keep them from dying prematurely as cut flowers, use a few simple tricks to keep them going. Explore 5 tips for a lavish bloom of up to 4 weeks here.

The orchid also makes a beautiful cut flower

Tip 1: Cut the stem before setting

Before you put an orchid in the vase as a cut flower, cut the flower stem 1-2 cm at the bottom. To do this, please use a clean, disinfected knife so that no germs get into the cable paths. If the stalk is still in a transport tube, you can finally remove it now.

Tip 2: Use warm water

Put lukewarm water in the vase and orchids will show themselves from their most beautiful side. Panicle orchids, such as Phalaenopsis, love it when they are spoiled with 35 to 38 degrees warm water.

Tip 3: Water regularly

In contrast to their conspecifics in flower pots, an orchid as a cut flower needs a lot of water. Therefore, water regularly as soon as the level in the vase drops. Please use lukewarm filtered water to avoid cold shock.

Tip 4: Place light and moderately warm

In the right location, orchids in the vase inspire with their exotic magic for up to 4 weeks. Therefore choose a place with these light and temperature conditions:

  • Bright location, without direct sun at noon
  • Moderately warm temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius
  • No immediate proximity to an active radiator

A cold draft does not do well for an orchid as a cut flower. You should therefore avoid a location where the window is tilted for ventilation. The danger is too great that a cold draft will frighten the flowers so much that they will drop all the blossoms.

Tip 5: Trim the stems from time to time

After a few days in the water, the stem ends gradually soften. To ensure that the transport of water continues unhindered, trim the flower stems freshly every few days.
