- Small selection of poinsettia varieties
Anyone who thinks that a poinsettia always has to be red is wrong. Poinsettias are available in many different varieties, which primarily differ in the color of their bracts. You can also buy poinsettias as minis, which are particularly suitable for Christmas decorations.

It doesn't always have to be red
The vast majority of poinsettia varieties have bright red bracts. However, there are also a variety of varieties that come in other colors. Most are breeds that have emerged from the original varieties.
In addition to red, poinsettias can come in white, cream, yellow, pink, and even bicolor. The occasionally offered plants with blue flowers are not real breeds. Here the bracts have been sprayed with paint. These plants usually don't last very long because the paint sticks the leaves together. These poinsettias are not suitable for keeping for several years.
Some varieties are particularly suitable for growing as mini varieties. Other species are ideal for bonsai cultivation.
You can grow poinsettias for several years
Even if it is laborious, you can grow poinsettias for several years and make them bloom.
For this, the plants from Central and South America as well as Mexico have to be properly cared for.
This applies above all to the lighting conditions. As short-day plants, poinsettias need a longer period of light, with less than 11 hours of light per day. You can achieve a new bloom if you put the plants in the dark for a few weeks.
