For many people, the Christmas star is an integral part of the Christmas decoration of the home. But not only as a potted plant does it cut a fine figure with its colored bracts. Poinsettias are also very decorative as cut flowers in vases. With proper care, the cut stems will last up to two weeks.

Poinsettias also trump in the vase

Poinsettia as a cut flower for vases and arrangements

Long poinsettia stems are ideal for bouquets, which together with fir branches and corkscrew hazels spread the Christmas spirit.

If the stems are too short, use the poinsettias for Advent arrangements, which harmonize very well with Christmas balls and pine cones. Advent wreaths can also be decorated with it.

Prepare the stems for the vase

The poinsettia belongs to the spurge family. It contains a toxic milky sap that exudes from the interfaces. In order for the poinsettia to last as a cut flower, you must prevent too much juice from leaking out.

Cut the stems at an angle. Hold the ends of the stems in very hot water for a short time and then rinse them off again with cold water. Alternatively, you can use a lighter or candle to seal the cut ends.

You must not cut the poinsettia again afterwards.

Caring for the poinsettia in the vase

  • Use cool, not too cold water
  • Add preservative
  • cool, not draughty location
  • if necessary, refrigerate at night
  • Top up with water if necessary

The vase should be high enough that one third of the stems are in the water.

Never add sugar or other substances to the vase water to keep the poinsettia fresh longer as a cut flower. Better to use a preservative.

Top up the vase water regularly. If you put the stalks in the water without preservative, change the water daily. Rinse the stems well with cold water before placing them back in the vase. But don't cut them again.

tips

Since the poinsettia is poisonous to cats and other pets in particular, place bouquets and flower arrangements out of the reach of animals. Discard the vase water immediately later, as there may be remains of the milky juice in it.
