Vanilla comes from the tropics and needs similar circumstances

How to water the vanilla orchid correctly?

A well-balanced water balance is one of the mainstays in the professional care of vanilla. Since the orchid can store moisture in its strong leaves, it copes with short-term drought much better than waterlogging. How to water the magical houseplant correctly:

  • At any time of the year, water only when the substrate has dried 2-3 cm deep on the surface
  • Always use lime-free water at room temperature
  • Spray the leaves several times a week

Adapt the frequency of watering to the current light and temperature conditions. On warm summer days, the vanilla orchid thirsts more often than during the cool, dark winter months.

Is fertilizing part of the care program?

In its fleshy leaves, the vanilla orchid not only stores water, but also nutrients. To avoid over-fertilization, please administer half the concentration of special orchid fertilizer. Common flower fertilizers (1.95€) from the trade contain too high a salt concentration for the sensitive roots. From March to September add the liquid fertilizer to the lime-free irrigation water. From October to February, stop feeding.

Is a pruning necessary?

Given the leisurely pace of growth, you will be pleased to note every additional centimeter of growth in your vanilla orchid. A first pruning is therefore only considered after a few years. If the tendrils get longer, simply guide them up using a suitable climbing aid. If the orchid grows too much for you, cut the shoots back to the desired length in early spring.

tips

Is the stress of everyday life getting to you? Then cut 5 home-grown vanilla pods open on the side and place them in 500 ml of brandy, rum or vodka for 4 weeks. The next time your stomach rebels, add a few drops of vanilla extract to tea, fruit juice or mineral water and be amazed by the positive effects.
