Dipladenia is relatively easy to propagate if you provide the right conditions when growing your cuttings. It may even be easier for you to grow young plants than to overwinter the old plant.

Dipladenia is very easy to propagate from cuttings

How to cut the cuttings

You can grow your new Dipladenia, also known as Mandevilla, from cut shoots that result from pruning, but you can also cut extra cuttings. Always use clean cutting tools so that no germs can be transferred to the cuttings. Cut off fresh or slightly woody shoots about three to four inches long below a leaf node and remove the lower pairs of leaves.

The cultivation of cuttings

For good rooting, your cuttings need optimal conditions, which you can easily provide them with an indoor greenhouse. Alternatively, you can cover the seed pots (€16.68) with a transparent plastic bag or film, which you only remove once the roots have successfully formed. If you like, disinfect the potting soil or the peat-sand mixture before inserting the cuttings in the oven at 180 °C. About 10 minutes is enough.

During rooting, the cuttings need a temperature of at least 23 °C and constant humidity in the air and soil. Therefore, it is best to place the growing pots in a greenhouse or pull a foil or plastic bag - both should be transparent - over the pots and place them in a bright place without direct sunlight so that the new leaves do not burn immediately.

The essentials in brief:

  • only use clean cutting tools
  • cut fresh or slightly woody shoots
  • Cut cuttings about 7 to 10 cm long
  • cut just below a leaf node
  • remove lower pairs of leaves
  • Possibly disinfect the substrate in the oven
  • Pull cuttings under foil or in the indoor greenhouse
  • ideal rooting temperature: at least 23 °C
  • Keep potting soil moist but not wet

tips

Make sure the temperature and humidity are even during cultivation, otherwise your cuttings will not root well.
