Black bamboo of the species Phyllostachys nigra grows very quickly. The individual stalks come out of the ground with their final diameter and have reached their maximum height after a few weeks. After a few years they die off.

Black bamboo can grow up to 10 meters tall

The new culms each year are about one meter longer than those of the previous year, until the bamboo has reached its maximum size. However, this depends very much on the prevailing climate. Hardly any bamboo grows as big in Germany as in its original homeland.

The growth of the Phyllostachys nigra in brief:

  • maximum height: about 5 to 10 meters
  • Growth time per culm: approx. two to four months
  • Increase in height per year: approx. one meter

tips

The individual culms of the Phyllostachys nigra die off after about eight years. However, so many new culms are forming that you should limit the spread of your bamboo with a rhizome barrier.
