Exotic plants are very popular in home gardens. The giant bamboo is no exception. With its enormous size of 15 - 20 meters and the gigantic speed of growth, it is also an impressive sight.

Giant bamboo copes well with the climatic conditions in Germany

The giant bamboo, also traded as Dendrocalamus giganteus, has no problems with the climatic conditions in Germany. It is very hardy and tolerates frost over a longer period of time down to around -15 °C. However, he has nothing against winter protection in the first few years. A cover of leaves, straw or brushwood gets the root ball very well.

The care of the giant bamboo

Like all types of bamboo, the giant bamboo is very easy to care for. It just needs a lot of light and water. It thrives particularly well in a sunny location. There, however, it must also be carefully supplied with water, even in winter. On frost-free days, a little watering is very useful. As an evergreen plant, bamboo is more likely to die of thirst than to freeze to death.

The ground can be a little damp for the giant bamboo, but must not be waterlogged. It should also be nutritious and loose. The giant bamboo can be planted by a pond or stream, but not directly in the water. Here it doesn't need to be watered as often if it can pull the water out of the ground.

However, curled leaves are a sign of lack of water. Then the Dendrocalamus giganteus must be cast immediately. If the leaves are turning yellow, overwatering or overwatering could be the culprit.

The essentials in brief:

  • choose a sunny location if possible
  • nutrient-rich and loose soil, likes a little damp
  • hardy to around - 15 °C
  • grows to about 15 - 20 m tall
  • grows very fast
  • water well, especially on sunny days
  • water even in winter on frost-free days

tips

You can grow the giant bamboo (lat. Dendrocalamus giganteus) well in Germany. Although it does not grow as big here as in its original homeland, it does reach an impressive size of 15 - 20 m.
